The Power of Breathwork and Nervous System Regulation

As a doctor who juggles long shifts, stressful decision-making, and a fast-paced work environment, I’ve learned firsthand how challenging it can be to manage stress and maintain emotional balance.

However, in my journey to better self-care, I discovered a powerful tool that has been life-changing—breathwork.

I want to share how incorporating breathwork into my daily routine has helped me regulate my nervous system and bring emotional stability into my life.

I believe it can do the same for you.

Understanding Breathwork and the Nervous System

Our breath is intimately connected to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls involuntary processes like heart rate, digestion, and stress responses.

The ANS is divided into two main parts: the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for the “fight or flight” response) and the parasympathetic nervous system (which promotes relaxation and recovery).

When we are under stress, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in, and we experience a heightened state of alertness—rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and tension. Breathwork helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting us from a state of stress to one of calm and balance.

This shift allows us to regain control of our emotions and reactions.

Emotional Balance through Breathwork

Breathwork isn’t just about calming the body; it also has a profound impact on our emotional state. When we’re stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious, our breathing becomes shallow and erratic, reinforcing our negative emotions.

By intentionally slowing down and deepening our breath, we can access a state of mindfulness and emotional regulation.

Breathwork has helped me personally in moments of stress, whether it’s the high-pressure environment of a hospital or navigating the emotional toll of patient care. I’ve found that specific techniques can help to stabilize my mood and re-centre my thoughts, helping me feel grounded and more at ease.

Practical Tips for Breathwork

Here are a few simple and effective techniques to use breathwork for nervous system regulation that I’ve incorporated into my daily routine:

Box Breathing:

Inhale for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold again for 4. Repeat this cycle 3-5 times.

Diaphragmatic Breathing:

Focus on breathing deeply into your belly rather than shallow chest breathing. Place a hand on your abdomen to feel it rise and fall with each breath.

Alternate Nostril Breathing:

Close one nostril with your thumb, inhale through the other and then switch sides. This practice promotes a sense of balance and calm.

    Summary

Incorporating breathwork into my life has been transformative, both in managing the physiological stress response and achieving emotional equilibrium.

The science behind breathwork shows that by engaging our breath, we can directly influence our nervous system, bringing calm to our bodies and minds.

Whether you’re dealing with the everyday pressures of a busy life or the emotional ups and downs of work, breathwork is a tool that can support you in staying grounded, balanced, and in control.

I hope you’ll give it a try—it’s a small change that can make a big difference.
