In Conversation – Back on my Feet – April 15 202061 min read

by Dr Olivia Ong

On April 15th at 12:30 pm, I had the privilege of sitting down in conversation with Royal Rehab Group CEO Matt Mackay at Royal Rehab Ryde.

Years ago, after a catastrophic accident, I was told the devastating news that I would never walk again. In that moment, the future I had so carefully imagined seemed to slip away entirely. What followed were years of intensive, grueling rehabilitation and therapy.

However, along that difficult journey, I discovered something vital: the transformative power of self-compassion. It was through self-compassion that I gained not only physical strength, but a much deeper understanding of the true healing process.

Moving from doctor to patient, and ultimately back again, I was able to reflect during our conversation on what it truly means to navigate recovery, build resilience, and rebuild a life from the ground up.

A Heartfelt Thank You

My story was shared for anyone currently facing a challenge that feels completely insurmountable. I wanted it to serve as a gentle but powerful reminder that even in our toughest, darkest times, it is always possible to find a way forward.

“Thank you to Matt Mackay for hosting, to the team at Royal Rehab Ryde for organizing, and to every single person who attended. Your presence, warmth, and shared stories meant the world to me.”
