Supporting Children’s Emotional Well-Being
As a physician and a mother, I’ve seen firsthand how a child’s nervous system plays a crucial role in their ability to focus, learn, and navigate emotions. Whether it’s a meltdown after school, trouble sitting still in class, or struggles with anxiety, these behaviours are often signals that a child’s nervous system is overwhelmed.
The good news? There are simple, science-backed strategies parents and educators can use to help children regulate their nervous systems, building resilience and emotional balance.
Understanding Nervous System Regulation in Kids
Children’s nervous systems are still developing, making them more sensitive to stressors like loud environments, changes in routine, or even emotional tension at home or school. When a child feels unsafe or overwhelmed, their nervous system shifts into fight, flight, or freeze mode. This can look like tantrums, withdrawal, hyperactivity, or difficulty concentrating.
By providing the right tools and environment, we can help children shift back into a regulated state where they feel safe, connected, and able to learn.
Tools for Parents and Educators
Breathwork and Movement
Simple breathing exercises like “balloon breathing” (inhale deeply, then exhale slowly like blowing up a balloon) can calm a child’s nervous system in moments of stress. Movement-based activities, like stretching, yoga, or outdoor play, also help release excess energy and restore balance.
Sensory Support
Some children need sensory input to self-regulate. Soft fabrics, weighted blankets, fidget tools, or sensory corners in classrooms can provide comfort and grounding.
Predictability and Routine
A consistent daily routine helps children feel safe and secure. Visual schedules, transition warnings (“In five minutes, we’ll clean up”), and calming rituals like bedtime stories reinforce stability.
Co-Regulation: The Power of Connection
Children learn self-regulation through connection with calm, attuned adults. Simply being present—offering a reassuring touch, a gentle voice, or validating their emotions—helps guide them back to a regulated state.
A Foundation for Lifelong Resilience
When we help children regulate their nervous systems, we’re giving them tools for a lifetime of emotional well-being. Whether at home or in the classroom, small changes—like mindful breathing, sensory support, and connection—can make a world of difference.
By understanding and supporting nervous system regulation, we empower children to feel safe, focused, and ready to thrive. Let’s build a future where every child has the tools they need to navigate their emotions with confidence!
