How Yoga Became My Go-To for Stress Relief

As a physician, I’ve always focused on evidence-based ways to improve health. But when I experienced burnout, I realised that medicine alone wasn’t enough—I needed something deeper to regulate my stress and restore balance. That’s when I turned to yoga.

At first, I thought yoga was just about flexibility, but I quickly learned that its true power lies in nervous system regulation. The combination of movement, breathwork, and mindfulness shifts the body from stress mode (fight-or-flight) to a state of calm and balance (rest-and-digest). Science now confirms what yogis have known for centuries: yoga helps regulate the nervous system, making us more resilient to modern stress.

Here’s how yoga supports mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being—and how you can start incorporating it into your daily life.

Breathwork: Activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System

One of the most powerful aspects of yoga is breath control (pranayama). Slow, deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, signaling to the body that it’s safe to relax.

💡 Try this: Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for six. This simple technique reduces stress in minutes.

Movement: Releasing Tension and Regulating the Nervous System

Yoga postures (asanas) don’t just stretch muscles—they release stored tension in the body, which can keep the nervous system in a heightened state of stress. Gentle movements like Child’s Pose, Forward Fold, and Cat-Cow soothe the body, while stronger poses like Warrior II help build resilience.

Mindfulness: Rewiring the Brain for Calm

Yoga is more than physical movement—it’s a mindfulness practice. By focusing on the present moment, yoga trains the brain to break free from chronic stress patterns. Research shows that mindfulness reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and increases feelings of peace.

Small Steps Toward a Balanced Nervous System

In a world filled with stress, yoga offers an accessible, science-backed way to bring balance to the nervous system. Whether you have five minutes or an hour, integrating yoga into your routine can help you feel calmer, more focused, and more resilient.

If you’re looking for a natural way to support your nervous system, start with just one deep breath or a simple stretch today. Your body and mind will thank you!
