Learning and Unlearning: The Journey to a Dynamic Growth Mindset3 min read

by Chris Wood

Introduction

As a busy doctor, I’ve often found myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information I need to manage and the fast-paced nature of my work. Yet, amid the chaos, I’ve discovered that the key to maintaining sanity and ensuring continuous professional growth lies in cultivating a dynamic growth mindset. This journey of learning and unlearning has been transformative, allowing me to adapt and thrive in an ever-evolving medical landscape.

What is a Dynamic Growth Mindset?

A dynamic growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, hard work, and the willingness to embrace change. This mindset encourages continuous learning, flexibility, and resilience, enabling individuals to adapt to new challenges and seize opportunities for improvement.

Embracing Continuous Learning

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of continuous learning. Medical science is constantly evolving, with new research and technologies emerging at a rapid pace. To stay current, I make it a point to dedicate time each week to read the latest medical journals and attend relevant webinars. This commitment not only keeps me informed but also inspires me to seek innovative solutions to complex medical problems.

For instance, as a pain specialist, I recently enrolled in a course on the latest advancements in regenerative medicine for chronic pain management. Initially, I was hesitant to dive into this emerging field, doubting its practicality and efficacy. However, by embracing a growth mindset and thoroughly studying the latest research and clinical trials, I began integrating regenerative techniques, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, into my practice. This approach has opened new avenues for treating patients with chronic pain, offering them relief where traditional methods had failed.

The Power of Unlearning

Equally important as learning is the ability to unlearn outdated practices and beliefs. Medicine is replete with long-standing traditions that may no longer be relevant. Recognizing this, I’ve made it a point to question and reassess my methods regularly.

Recently I adjusted my approach to treating chronic lower back pain. For years, one of my go-to tools was prescribing opioid medications, believing it to be the most effective treatment. However, as new research highlighted the benefits of alternative therapies, I realized the necessity of unlearning my old habits, and seeking out newer ones.

By exploring and integrating techniques such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, acupuncture, and physical therapy, I have been able to provide my patients with more appropriate and effective treatment options where suitable, with less reliance on the more traditional approaches to pain management.

Balancing Professional and Personal Growth

Maintaining a growth mindset isn’t just about professional development; it also involves personal growth. Balancing a demanding career with personal life can be challenging, but adopting a dynamic mindset has helped me manage this balance more effectively. For instance, I’ve started practicing mindfulness and meditation, techniques that were initially unfamiliar to me. These practices have significantly reduced my stress levels, enabling me to be more present and effective both at work and home.

Where learning and unlearning can lead you…

The journey to a dynamic growth mindset is ongoing and requires dedication, curiosity, and the willingness to challenge oneself continually.

As a doctor, this mindset has not only enhanced my professional capabilities but also enriched my personal life.

By embracing both learning and unlearning, I’ve found a path to growth that is both rewarding and sustainable, proving that even in the busiest of careers, there’s always room for improvement and innovation.
